About Sapher

What is Sapher?

Sapher is an online safety and fraud protection tool that keeps your personal information secure from scams and phishing attempts by recognising and warning of potential malicious content.

Our identity

At Sapher, we are driven by a singular mission: to protect. Sapher was created to safeguard anyone from the ever-growing menace of cyber threats. Our dedication to this cause defines every aspect of our work and shapes our commitment to providing protection.

How it all started

Inspired by personal encounters with phishing scams and online fraud, our founders recognised the urgent need to protect users at the source of engagement—the individual. Channelling their expertise to create a solution that shields users from these dangers right from the outset, Sapher emerged as a beacon of trust, offering a simple yet robust defense mechanism against online threats.

While many companies focus on addressing vulnerabilities within networks, telcos, and banks, we recognise that the most critical point of protection is where users engage online. Unlike other products and services, Sapher proactively offers real-time protection that begins with the individual. By safeguarding users from the moment they interact with the digital world, Sapher ensures that personal information remains secure and users can browse, shop, and engage online with confidence.

Why do I need Sapher?

Australians lose over $3 billion to scams annually. With the rising threat of scams and phishing attempts, it’s crucial to safeguard your personal information. Sapher serves as a reliable tool to keep your digital footprint secure and prevent unauthorized access to your accounts.

Sapher provides peace of mind by proactively monitoring for suspicious activities and offering real-time protection against scams and fraudulent activities.

How does Sapher work?

Sapher is a browser extension that works quietly in the background as a connection between the browser and the websites the user visits. With Sapher, every click and webpage visit is instantly scrutinised, and suspicious activity will result in an alert or block. Our proactive approach and ongoing monitoring give continuous defence against cyber threats such as zero-day scams and phishing activities.

How is Sapher different from antivirus software?

Antivirus software and Sapher are targeting different things. To protect yourself againt malware or viruses on your laptop you could use antivirus software. Unlike traditional antivirus software however, Sapher doesn’t wait for threats to strike, but targets zero-day scams and phishing activities. Our vigilant scanning protocol, using unknown or lesser-known security vulnerabilities, quickly identifies and alerts users to any malicious content, ensuring proactive threat mitigation on every page they visit.

Does Sapher pick up scams in email and SMS?

Yes, Sapher works seamlessly with any webpage viewed on a browser, including those accessed through email or SMS links.

Can I use Sapher on all devices and browsers?

Sapher works seamlessly with Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge on desktop. The Sapher web extension is currently only available on desktop. To stay protected, only use browsers where Sapher is supported and installed. Installing Sapher on one browser does not make it automatically installed on all your browsers. If you happen to be using a different browser, kindly inform us, and we will explore the possibility of including it in our future!

When am I not protected by Sapher?

In certain situations, Sapher may not provide protection while browsing:

  • When not connected to the internet
  • When browsing in incognito mode
  • When using an in-app browser: Some apps open links in their own app-browser. For full protection, open links in your regular browser with the Sapher extension active.
  • When the Sapher extension is not turned on or the user has not logged into the account

If you have further questions, please contact Sapher customer support here and we will resolve them as quickly as possible.

What is the difference between an ad blocker, content blocker, and the Sapher extension?

Ad blockers are software tools designed to prevent ads from being displayed on websites, including pop-ups, banners, videos, and other types of marketing that can interrupt your browsing experience. Content blockers on the other hand, encompass a wider range of software that not only blocks ads but also other elements like tracking scripts, social media widgets, and website analytics tools that can impact page loading speed and pose privacy and security risks.

In contrast, Sapher evaluates the safety of websites you visit in real-time by assigning a trust rating. Utilising intelligent algorithms and a database of verification records to identify any suspicious activities on the site, Sapher provides instant protection against evolving cyber threats.

Consumer FAQ

Can I choose to visit a ‘suspicious’ site?

If a user decides to visit a website which Sapher has identified as suspicious, they are doing so at their own risk (refer to Sapher Terms and Conditions).

You can, however, choose to proceed against Sapher’s recommendation by ticking the box “I trust this website, add to my exemption list,” or by choosing to “Continue Temporarily.”

Does Sapher block malware, viruses, and malicious software?

Sapher detects and flags suspicious activity through smart algorithms and a database of records to ensure you are protected while you browse the internet. We do not check your installed apps and software for viruses or malware.

Does Sapher slow down my browser?

Sapher provides complete protection without slowing browsing speed nor consuming excess storage. Always make sure your Sapher browser extension is updated.

Sapher vs VPN – what’s the difference?

A VPN or Virtual Private Network encrypts your internet connection and routes your online traffic through a secure server, hiding your IP address and location. Sapher, on the other hand, protects you from untrustworthy sites using smart algorithms and a large database of verification records to notify you of any suspicious activity. This way, Sapher protects you with every click you make when browsing or checking out SMS and email links. Simply make sure you use Sapher on your desktop browser!

Does Sapher replace my antivirus software?

Antivirus software and Sapher target different things. To protect yourself against malware or viruses on your laptop, you could use antivirus software. Unlike traditional antivirus software, however, Sapher doesn’t wait for threats to strike – it proactively identifies and blocks them. By continuously monitoring your online activities in real-time, Sapher detects and prevents suspicious links and behavior, even those not yet reported. This approach protects you from known and emerging dangers, providing peace of mind while browsing.

Does Sapher affect any of the other extensions I have installed?

Sapher has no impact on any other web extension you have installed in your browser. Further, whilst providing complete protection, Sapher does not slow browsing speed nor consume excess storage.

How do I reset my Sapher phone extension? (Deleted)

  • Close your browser app, and open it up again
  • Now repeat the first 3 steps above, but this time, toggle the Sapher browser extension button ON

How do I turn off my extension?

If you choose to turn off the Sapher browser extension, remember to proceed browsing and clicking on links (e.g., in SMS or emails) with caution, as Sapher will no longer be able to protect you against scam and phishing attempts.

To deactivate the Sapher browser extension, follow these steps:

  • On desktop: Navigate to the puzzle piece next to your Sapher browser extension icon, in the top-right corner.
  • In the drop-down window, select “Manage extensions”

What does the number of suspicious sites I have visited mean?

The phrase “This is the number of suspicious sites you have visited…” refers to the count of unsafe websites that Sapher has prevented you from accessing due to their low Sapher rating.

A low Sapher rating means suspicious activity has been detected on the website. Our proactive method doesn’t just react to known threats – it anticipates and deflects them before they can harm you during your browsing.

Every 30 days, the number of suspicious sites on your Dashboard is updated to provide you with the most recent information.

Does Sapher track websites I visit, and keep my browsing history?

Sapher keeps track of all sites flagged for having a low Sapher rating to continue protecting users from malicious content. However, Sapher does not keep a record of your personal browsing history. In fact, Sapher protects your privacy by de-identifying your browsing history, ensuring that your online activities remain private and anonymous.

What does the green tick and red exclamation on your browser extension icon mean?

A green tick on your Sapher browser extension icon means no malicious content has been detected on this site. Meanwhile, when a red exclamation mark is displayed on your extension icon, it indicates you have proceeded against Sapher’s recommendation into this website.

To clarify – when Sapher finds that a website may have suspicious activity, a low Sapher rating notification will be displayed. You will then have the option to proceed at your own risk – simply check the box “I trust this website, add to my exemption list”. Alternatively, you can choose to “Continue Temporarily”. When either of these options have been chosen, you proceed against Sapher recommendation, and a red tick will be displayed on your Sapher browser extension icon.

Am I covered while travelling?

Regardless of where you travel, Sapher will continue to protect you. All you need is an internet connection to remain logged in.

How do I add a trusted or ‘exempt’ site?

In some cases, however, you may encounter legitimate websites that have lower Sapher ratings and have therefore triggered a Sapher alert.

If this occurs, you can add any website to an exemption list by ticking the ‘I trust add to exemption list’ box (when alert is received).

Please do this with caution (after reviewing all the Sapher warnings), as it is always possible that legitimate brand websites are impersonated by scammers. If a user chose to proceed and visit a website even though Sapher has deemed the site as suspicious, the user is doing so at their own risk (see Terms and conditions).

  • When the Sapher extension is not turned on or the user has not logged into the account.

Can I login on multiple devices at one time?

Right now, Sapher can be installed on multiple browsers and devices. But a user can only be logged in on one device at a time. We are actively working on multi-devices, multi-browsers and family-plans. We will communicate when these are released.

How long does my browser extension stay logged in for?

You’ll need to login to Sapher at least once a month (as cookies naturally expire and won’t recall your login).

This may happen more often if you regularly clear your cookies. However, if login is needed, you’ll always be notified to ensure continued protection while browsing.

What happens when I change my Wi-fi or hotspot connection?

When transitioning between different Wi-Fi or hotspot connections, stay protected by logging back in to your Sapher account.

Why does Sapher keep on asking me to login every now and then?

Sapher works as a browser extension to protect you from suspicious sites. When your browser is set to clear cookies or site data upon closing, this could log you out of your extension when you close your browser.
